Background[edit]
As a result of the Industrial Policy Resolution of 1956, the government of India invited the design team of Charles and Ray Eames to recommend a programme of design to serve as an aid to small industries in India. On the basis of their document, 'The India Report', the government of India set up the National Institute of Design in 1961 as an autonomous national institution for research, service and training in industrial design and visual communication. The Sarabhai family, especially Gautam Sarabhai and his sister Gira, played a major role in establishment of this institute.[4] Designer and sculptor Dashrath Patel was its founder secretary. He held the post till 1981, and was awarded the Padma Shri in the same year.[5]

The institute has 3 active campuses, Main Campus-Ahmedabad, Post Graduate Campus - Gandhinagar and the third one is R&D Campus - Bengaluru. Other three new NIDs were established by Government of India in 2015 and later.

National Institute of Design, Gandhinagar[edit]
The National Institute of Design, Gandhinagar is an extension campus of National Institute of Design, situated in the city of Gandhinagar. It provides postgraduate courses in New Media Design, Transportation and Automobile design, Apparel Design, Strategic Design Management and Toy and Game Design.[6]

The Bengaluru office of NID was initially located at Rajajinagar and functioned as an interface to coordinate projects between the main institute at Ahmedabad and the technology industry which is centred on Bengaluru.
A campus was later planned to be built at Yeshwantpur, a suburb in Northwest Bengaluru. The new campus was built at a cost of 7.5 crores and was officially inaugurated on 31 March 2006 by Dr Darlie O'Koshy, who was the executive director of NID at the time.[7]
Campus[edit]
The campus is located in Peenya, 3 km from Yeshwantpur railway station on the arterial Tumkur Road (National Highway 4) that connects Bengaluru and Mumbai. The campus is in proximity to two other Central Government Institutes, Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI) and Indian Plywood Industries Research and Training Institute (IPIRTI), and is 5 km away from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) along the same road.
The Campus can be accessed by public transport buses operated by the BMTC from the junction of Outer Ring Road and Tumkur Road at Gorguntepalya or Peenya on Tumkur Road. The campus is also accessible by the Bangalore Metro and is located 100m from Peenya Metro Station.

Industry and online programs[edit]
NID conducts workshops for industry professionals and students all year long. Some of these are for industry professionals only.[8]
NODE - NIDs Online Design Education[edit]
In December 2015, NID launched NODE (NIDs Online Design Education),[4][9] an online initiative which delivers self-directed and self-paced design classes from the faculty of the National Institute of Design to students across the country. Students need not be enrolled in NID, and must only pay a nominal fee, to take these classes. NID does not issue physical certificates on course completion. Only a digital certificate is issued.[10] The first course was launched on 23 December 2015, titled 'Design Fundamentals', and consisted of 47 online classes.
Dfrost[edit]
Dfrost is the annual design and cultural festival hosted by the National Institute of Design R&D campus, Bangalore. It is held around the 20th of March every year.[11]
Proposed NIDs[edit]
National Institute of Design, Kurukshetra is under construction which was opened by Haryana CM Bhupendra Singh Hooda in 2012. The creation of four NIDs was suggested as part of the government's 2007 National Design Policy.[12]
The foundation stone for National Institute of Design, Jorhat was laid by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in February 2011,[13] while land has also been earmarked for the Telangana campus in the state capital Hyderabad.[12]

Courses offered[edit]
The institute offers one main course which follows the two semester per year pattern.
Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD)[edit]
This 4-year course is offered in three specialsations by NID Vijayawada. Until 2014, NID Ahemdabad too used to confer this diploma, however has conferred a bachelor's degree since 2014 when the National Institute of Design Act 2014 was passed, allowing the institute to do so. This course has a total of 60 seats. Even though it is a Diploma level certification, it is at par with the other NIDs by virtue of it being an autonomous Institute under the Central Government.
Infrastructure[edit]
The transit campus for the institute has been set up at the EEE & ECE Block, Acharya Nagarjuna University. The current campus include Studios, Knowledge Management Centre (Library) and I.T. Lab which is par excellence. Also, the institute provides students with full-time internet access for all kinds of research and knowledge gathering.
Studio[edit]
The campus currently has 3 studios where the students can learn and grow as a designer.
Knowledge Management Centre (Library)[edit]
The library at the campus is well acquainted with books and reading material for students, accessible at all college hours. The library is still building up and growing fast. It also contains discs with digital information which can be used by faculty as well as students.
I.T. Lab[edit]
The I.T. Lab for students is well equipped with latest generation of apple workstations with its own local server. I.T. Lab also provides access to internet throughout the day and all kind of latest licensed software that are required for the design purposes.
Hostel Facility[edit]
The institute provides hostel facility in the society named IJM Rain Tree Park, Situated opposite to Acharya Nagarjuna University ANU for short. The students are provided with 3-BHK Flats in Teak & Maple Block, with maids who clean the flats on daily basis. Mrs. Vijaya Lakshmi & her two sons are the care taker of the flats. There are two wardens, Mr. RamaKrishna and Mrs. Kumari.Girls hostel flats are on a single floor with two security guards on duty during the night. Each Flat consists of six students, two in each bedroom system. Some flats interiors are done some are bare walls. Cot and tables are provided one has to buy mattresses and pillows. There is doctor on call and there is one ambulance car (a brand new dezire car) provided by NID which is dedicated to any emergency at night.
The society is uber class in every standard and has all facilities like super store, ATMs, medical shop, temple, cricket, basketball, lawn tennis, badminton, other indoor games, Gym and Swimming pool. The club house has a restaurant called 'Open Grill'
Overall the hostels are 9/10 says Saket
There are 5 Shuttle mini busses for ferrying students from hostels at Rain Tree Park to NID College Campus at ANU (Aacharya Nagarjuna University) These shuttles also take students to Vijaywada and Guntur for excursions and shopping trips.

NID has hired another Flat in the same block which is used as mess for students which provides them food two times Break Fast and Dinner is served here. The lunch is brought to NID college campus at ANU and served in the dining hall. The students then eat the provided food.
