The most elusive new mobile PvP title in recent times. You might find it difficult to know what BoT is, where it came from and most importantly, where to download it from. and why you haven't been able to. Then there's how to play it.
First, here's the important stuff. as of 16th July 2018;
Battle of Titans 1.4.1 is available on the App Store and Google Play in the UK, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
It is not yet available in the USA and there is no official release schedule for other countries, but word is version 1.5 will be available in North America.
If you're coming from War Robots, set your expectations. This is not the same gamingexperience. If you played Call of Duty and then switched to Battlefield, this will have a similar feeling. It feels less arcade and more simulator.
It's still a game that is in it's early days, it only has two maps, six bots and half a dozen weapons. Comparing this to War Robots it seems anaemic, but considering the business practices over at Pixonic HQ I'm willing to forgive BoT a whole lot more than I would have otherwise.
The big points of difference with Battle of Titans compared to War Robots;
It has cross platform play between Android and iOS. This means you can finally play with and against friends who happen to have another type of phone.
BoT has manual vertical aiming, allowing you to choose exactly where you want to shoot. WR provides movement on the horizontal plane, which is very well done but a couple of targeting issues arise when the enemy is above or below you.
Each part of the mech has it's own hp, meaning you can target and concentrate fire on it's legs to immobilise it. Or focus on a weapon to blow it off. The section you're aiming at has a small white dot on it. and on smaller screens it is hard to keep it focussed on one part, especially when the enemy are moving around.
Your hangar is made up of six points. A light bot occupies one point, medium is two points and a heavy is three or four points. The upshot of this is that you cannot have too much firepower and hp on all your mechs in the same match. Eg, you could have six light mechs, or one medium and four light. etc.
Weapons and mechs cannot be upgraded, rather they can be modified with modules. Each mech has weapons, core armor, legs and circuits that can accomodate modules. Attaching a module slightly alters the behaviour of that part. eg, weapon mods can increase magazine size by 1 bullet, or reloading speed, or RPM. Leg modules can increase sprinting speed, reduce sprint cooldown, increase leg armor, etc. Circuit modules can increase defense against EMP.. and so on. Modules can be swapped between mechs of the same type. So sprint speed module for a M.A.O will fit another M.A.O, but it will not fit a Ravager. There is no grind time of hours, days or WEEKS for upgrades to happen.
Bots and weapons are available in Tiers. Currently there are three Tiers, T1, T2 and T3. The higher the Tier, the more modules can be fitted, increasing effectiveness. A T1 weapon/mech cannot be upgraded to T2. It must be purchased with in game EC currency that is earned in gameplay.
Almost every mech has a sprint that can be engaged and disengaged at will. This means you can engage your sprint which lasts for a maximum of 10 seconds, but you could disengage it after three seconds, which means the cooldown is reduced to about three seconds. This means you can use strategic bursts of speed to evade a homing missile or just enough to get behind cover. Smaller mechs like Little Shon and Mite have a jump function, rather than sprint.
Purchasing additional mechs and weapons is opportunistic. There is no static store where you can get whatever mech, weapon or module that you want. The market delivers content on a routine, what is delivered is random. This means you need to wait for what you want to show up before you can buy it. You can advance the next delivery of items for 5,000 EC . but to advance the next one is 10,000 EC. then $20,000 EC. etc.
Weapon ranges are the actual projectile travel distance, meaning homing rockets can be outrun.
Enemies can hide behind terrain and not be visible in your targeting system making dynamic play styles possible. If you go behind a thick enough structure you can go completely dark on the enemy radar so they cannot target you, but you also cannot target them.
There is ONE type of currency. It's called EC, whatever that means. You can earn it by playing games. On average I get about 70,000 EC for a match I lose, and about 150,000 EC for a match I win and actively participate in. There's no silver, no gold, no eleventy types of components, no tokens, no keys. A T1 Nelly, which is a spider bot that can actually climb any surface and not just dry hump it until it elevates, costs 650,000 EC.
The last thing to mention is that yes, Battle of Titans has and will have IAP. You can currently buy a T3 Mite (light bot that can crawl anywhere) for about $30 USD. You can also buy a premium subscription for $20 USD / month which gives you 50% extra EC per match. Sounds familiar? It's not quite pay to win, because the enhancements modules and Tiers give you is nothing compared to the power imbalance that is at the core of War Robots.
Remember these are the same developers who created War Robots, but also keep in mind that they split off, allegedly because there were disputes about the direction War Robots was going in. From my perspective this paints them in a much more favourable light, although with the limited maps, mechs and equipment I'm not quite prepared to spend the cash for premium. There is new content coming, like what looks to be a true airborne drone mech, and the developers are doing a lot with a little, so that day might come soon.
