Electrical Sounds. Occasionally, high-pitched sounds coming from the motherboard are from electrical components in the system experiencing a strong charge or malfunctioning. The power supply can emit a high-pitched sound if it experiences a surge. “Squeals,” according to Tecca’s Matt Jessell, can be ominous signs.

To make a long story short I am getting a painful high pitched piercing sound from my speakers.
If I mute it's gone, when I un-mute it starts making me go mad.
It is a Yamaha receiver connected to 7 Paradigm speakers.
It also does HDMI passthrough for my D* HR21-700 and my PS3.
This just started happening a week ago or so.
It drove me to get ear drops and sudafed thinking it was an in my ear thing because I can turn it off or mute it and it goes away but if I listen it sticks in my head because it is such an aweful penetrating thing.
What is the cause?

Is this for real? If so, try resetting the receiver.
You must be young to hear something so high pitched.

I had a similar situation with my wife being able to hear a whirring noise on an SSP where I could not. We just swapped it out for a new one. However, this sounds more extreme then what we experienced.
Without being there, it does sounds like the receiver or some type of electrical interference. Have you installed any new gadgets or light switches on the same circuit recently?
1. Reset receiver/power cord removal from wall too
2. Remove all the devices connected to your receiver and see if it's still whirring.
3. If you can try another SSP or receiver and see if it goes away.

It is too real. It is aweful. I'm 29, but had two 15' JL's from 16 to 20 years old in my car so my hearing shouldn't be all that good.
I reset my D* HR21-700, my t.v., power cycled my avr and even switched out hdmi's.
What do you mean by resetting the receiver?

So just pull the plug and then plug it back in?

No.. Each AVR has it's own proceddure for a factory reset. I do think it may help here.

Will go look at manual then.
As unplugging and plugging back in did nothing.
It is so noticeable at night because there is no ambient noise really, that I couldn't watch t.v. last night.

Already found it.
Seems that this will reset everything to factory defaults. I will jot down all my settings before doing so and will report back with results soon.
Thanks for all the help so far guys!

Still there after the 'reset'.
I did get a new t.v. and stand a few days before it started.
But I am using same outlet, same avr, same D* hd-dvr and same hdmi's in same order.(as previous t.v. and stand)
The t.v. gets one hdmi in from avr which does passthrough for my D* and PS3.
Only thing that changed is the position of the equipment in relation to each other.
Just sitting here troubleshooting it is painful?!?

I had a similar problem when i had cables hooked in to 'Phono' high gain input.
Also, check if system is properly grounded, or if your house is old, whether ground and null cables were tied together.
Do you have an old receiver hanging around, try it too.
Sorry to hear about this, Yamaha 3800 Paradigm Reference 7.1 v.2 here.

My guess is a ground loop problem or a faulty cable. latter more than the former

Unplug everything from the back of the receiver except the speakers.
Unplug everything from the electric except the AVR.
Turn on the receiver and see if you hear the noise.
If you don't start to add things back into the mix one by one, when the noise comes back that’s your culprit.
If you do then make sure nothing is on that could be interfering with the AVR, if not it's most likely the AVR.

Ground loops are 60 Hz, hardly high pitched, so I don't think that is his problem. I suspect his receiver is defective, and I suggest he try a different receiver, or even a different model. But if the noise goes away when the receiver is disconnected from the TV then the TV may be at fault, and he may have to connect video straight into the TV instead of through the receiver.

Eagles,
Remember Wilbert Montgomery??
Disconnect EVERYTHING ONE AT A TIME and see if that noise is still there. Strip it BARE until you find out if the whining goes away. I'd start with your display first because that is the newest addition.
If after removal of all components and the whirring is still there, I'd suspect it's the receiver. Any new lighting devices on the same electrical line could be a culprit, but this to me sounds receiver based.

Well, I had a local stop by and he said he heard a faint noise, but we didn't go after it.
The weird thing is I had my two buddies by last night so they could watch my Michael Clayton BR and they said they didn't hear it at all.
......So now I'm thinking it might be an inner-ear thing and should go to my doctor?
I did the whole process of elimination and couldn't determine where it was coming from

Do you hear that sound anywhere else except you HT room? If so, it may be your hearing.

Also forgot to ask...does the sound increase with raising the volume?
Check out this link just in case, although you said it isn't constant and goes away when the receiver is muted:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tinnitus
I suspect it really is a sound you are just sensitive to coming from your equipment. I know certain bulb filaments will ring under the right conditions but usually never really loud enough to cause a problem. There could be something similar going on in your setup but it would be helpful to know if it is affected by volume level.

I cannot tell if it increases with the volume going up....but I am sure that I can hear it with the receiver muted even.
I will read your link now.

Tinnitus may be it. I was hoping it was an ear thing, so I have been taking non-drowsy sudafed and twice a day(now day three) doing Debrox ear drops.
No change at all.
Are you saying that it may just be a piece of av equipment causing this?
If so, could it be my new t.v.?(sony kds-60a3000)

Have you unplugged the TV and still heard the sound that is bothering you when you are in the room with the equipment on?

So I guess that means it's not the new t.v.

I would suspect that it's NOT the new display. However, to rehash this, do you hear it when you leave the room?? The best place to go, is a quiet place and put your fingers in your ears (don't laugh) and if you still hear the high pitched sound you describe, its probably internal.
To many loud E-A-G-L-E-S chants at the Linc?? Just making light of a difficult situation for you.

LOL.....sorry guys. Wasted your time.
Thanks for the help though.
It is tinitus and I have an appointment on monday. From what I read and am told there may not be anything they can do
I hear it at all times and it is at its' worst when it is quiet and I plug my ears.
If they can't do anything for it I will not be around here much as I may have to crush my head with a hammer

Tinnuitus is no joke. I have it. Thankfully it's not bad. But I have to avoid loud music for extended periods or it can get bad enough that sleeping is difficult.
